Allergy Season & Your Teeth: Surprising Connections

Sniffles, sneezes, and toothaches? Your sinuses and teeth are more connected than you think!

Springtime in San Diego is gorgeous—sunshine, blooming flowers, and… pollen. For many, it also means the return of seasonal allergies. Sneezing, congestion, watery eyes… and, surprisingly, tooth pain. If you’ve ever felt a dull ache in your upper teeth while battling a sinus headache, you’re not imagining it. Your sinuses sit directly above your upper teeth, and when they swell or become congested, that pressure can translate into pain that feels like it’s coming from your teeth.

How Allergies Can Impact Your Oral Health

Allergy season doesn’t just make you miserable—it can also have subtle effects on your teeth and gums:

  • Sinus Pressure & Tooth Pain: Swollen sinuses press against the roots of upper teeth, creating pressure or a dull ache. This is often mistaken for a cavity or other dental issue.
  • Dry Mouth from Medications: Many people rely on antihistamines or decongestants to get through allergy season. These can reduce saliva flow, and saliva is essential for neutralizing acids and protecting against tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Mouth Breathing: When nasal congestion makes breathing through your nose difficult, you may breathe through your mouth. Mouth breathing dries out gums and enamel, increasing sensitivity and irritation.
  • Grinding & Clenching: Sinus pressure and discomfort can also cause jaw tension, leading some people to unconsciously grind or clench their teeth, which can wear down enamel over time.

When to See Your Dentist

While mild sinus-related tooth discomfort can sometimes be managed at home with decongestants and hydration, persistent or sharp pain should not be ignored. Toothaches caused by cavities, gum disease, or old fillings can be masked by sinus pressure. A professional dental exam ensures your teeth are healthy and that no underlying problems are being overlooked.

Tips to Protect Your Smile This Allergy Season

  • Stay Hydrated: Water helps keep your mouth moist and washes away bacteria.
  • Maintain Oral Hygiene: Brush twice a day and floss daily—even during allergy season.
  • Use Saliva-Boosting Products: Chewing sugar-free gum or using mouth rinses can combat dry mouth.
  • Schedule a Checkup: Don’t wait until discomfort worsens—early detection keeps small issues from becoming big problems.
