Dental work doesn’t last forever—make sure your smile keeps up!
We all know that maintaining a healthy smile takes regular checkups, brushing, and flossing. But what about the dental work you had done years ago—fillings, crowns, or bridges? While these restorations are designed to be durable, they aren’t invincible. Over time, wear and tear, cracks, discoloration, or shifting teeth can compromise their integrity. Recognizing the signs early can save you from bigger problems—and more extensive procedures—down the road.
1. Cracks or Chips
Even minor cracks in a crown or filling can allow bacteria to sneak in, leading to decay or infection beneath the restoration.
2. Wear and Tear
Daily chewing and grinding can gradually wear down your dental work. If your filling or crown looks worn or feels uneven, it’s time for a dental check.
3. Discoloration or Dark Spots
Changes in color—especially around the edges of a crown or filling—can signal leaks or underlying decay.
4. Sensitivity or Pain
Feeling extra sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods? Pain near a restoration can be a warning sign that it’s no longer protecting your tooth effectively.
5. Loose or Shifting Dental Work
Crowns or fillings should feel secure. If one feels loose or wobbly, don’t wait to get it checked—it could fall out or worsen the problem.
Old or damaged dental restorations can lead to tooth decay, infection, or even tooth loss if left untreated. By catching issues early, your dentist can often repair or replace the restoration before a more invasive procedure becomes necessary. Replacing dental crowns or fillings in a timely manner protects both your smile and your overall oral health.
