Periodontal Therapy: Protect Your Smile and Your Health

At Rancho Bernardo Cosmetic & Family Dental Care, we understand that a healthy smile starts with strong, healthy gums. Led by Dr. John Mobilia, our dedicated team is here to provide expert periodontal therapy to protect not just your teeth, but your overall health. If you’ve noticed bleeding gums, receding gums, or shifting teeth, it’s crucial to take action—gum disease is more than just a dental issue.

Why Periodontal Therapy is Vital

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a serious condition that doesn’t just threaten your smile—it can have far-reaching consequences for your overall health. Left untreated, gum disease is the leading cause of adult tooth loss. Even more concerning, research shows a strong connection between gum disease and systemic health problems like heart disease, diabetes, respiratory issues, and pregnancy complications. Chronic inflammation caused by gum disease can contribute to cardiovascular issues by increasing the risk of arterial plaque buildup, potentially leading to heart attacks or strokes. Taking care of your gums is about more than a great smile—it’s about protecting your well-being.

Our Comprehensive Approach to Periodontal Care

  • Catch It Early & Treat It Effectively: Early intervention is critical in managing gum disease. We perform detailed evaluations of your gum health and offer deep cleanings (scaling and root planing) under local anesthesia to remove harmful bacteria and tartar buildup. In some cases, localized antibiotics may be used to combat infection and promote healing.
  • Prevent Severe Complications: Untreated gum disease doesn’t just stop at your mouth. Advanced cases can lead to bone loss, tooth loss, and a higher risk of systemic diseases. Studies suggest that chronic gum infections can worsen conditions such as diabetes by making blood sugar levels harder to control. Our goal is to halt the disease’s progression and prevent the need for invasive surgical procedures.
  • Build a Strong Foundation: Your gums, ligaments, and jawbone form the periodontium, the essential support system for your teeth. When gum disease weakens this foundation, teeth may become loose or even fall out. Keeping this foundation healthy ensures the long-term stability of your smile and helps avoid future dental and medical complications.
