Protect Your Smile During Spring Sports Season

Spring in Rancho Bernardo means one thing for many families — sports season is in full swing. From soccer fields and baseball diamonds to basketball courts and skate parks, kids and teens are staying active and enjoying the beautiful San Diego weather.

While we love seeing young athletes thrive, spring sports also bring an increase in dental injuries. The good news? Many of these injuries are preventable with the right protection and proactive care.

If your child is playing sports this season, here’s what you need to know about protecting their smile.

Why Sports-Related Dental Injuries Are So Common

Contact sports and recreational activities can put teeth at risk. A sudden fall, collision, or stray elbow can cause:

  • Chipped or fractured teeth
  • Knocked-out teeth
  • Lip and cheek injuries
  • Jaw trauma

Even non-contact sports can result in accidents. And once permanent teeth are damaged, treatment can become complex and costly. Prevention is always easier than emergency repair.

Sports Mouthguards vs. Nightguards: What’s the Difference?

Many parents assume all mouthguards are the same — but they serve very different purposes.

Sports Mouthguards

A sports mouthguard is specifically designed to absorb shock and protect teeth during physical activity. It cushions impact and helps prevent broken or displaced teeth, soft tissue injuries, and jaw damage.

Custom-fitted sports mouthguards from your dentist offer:

  • Superior protection
  • Better comfort
  • Secure fit (so kids are more likely to wear them)
  • Easier breathing and speaking

Over-the-counter boil-and-bite guards may offer minimal protection, but they rarely match the fit and durability of a professionally made mouthguard.

Nightguards

Nightguards are completely different. They are worn while sleeping and are designed to protect teeth from grinding or clenching (bruxism). They are not made to withstand sports impact and should never be used as a substitute for a sports mouthguard.

If your child grinds their teeth at night and plays sports, they may need both appliances for full protection.

Pediatric Dentistry & Active Kids

Spring is an excellent time to schedule a preventive dental exam for your child. Routine visits allow us to:

  • Check developing teeth and alignment
  • Monitor for early signs of wear or damage
  • Ensure any mouthguard fits properly
  • Educate kids on protecting their smiles

Active children benefit greatly from consistent pediatric dental care. As teeth and jaws grow, protective appliances may need adjustments to ensure continued comfort and effectiveness.

When to Call an Emergency Dentist

Even with precautions, accidents can happen. Knowing when to act quickly makes all the difference.

Call your dentist immediately if your child experiences:

  • A knocked-out permanent tooth
  • Severe tooth pain after an impact
  • A visibly cracked or broken tooth
  • Swelling or bleeding that doesn’t stop

Time is critical, especially for knocked-out teeth. Quick treatment can sometimes save the tooth and prevent long-term damage.

Having an established relationship with a trusted dental office in Rancho Bernardo gives families peace of mind during sports season.
